Surviving cancer can mean different things to different people. That’s why we observe National Cancer Survivors Day 2024 on the first Sunday of June to celebrate the lives of patients with a history of cancer, recognize them, and raise awareness of their challenges. This day offers an opportunity to honor those who have faced cancer, to understand the ongoing struggles of survivorship, and to advocate for increased resources and research.
National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD) is an annual celebration of life held in the United States, Canada, and other participating countries. It is the world’s largest and fastest-growing annual cancer survivor event. According to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, a “survivor” is any person living with a history of cancer from the moment of diagnosis through the rest of their life. Communities and organizations unite in a symbolic event to show that life after a cancer diagnosis can be fulfilling and meaningful.
Cancer Survivorship in Numbers
The American Cancer Society estimates that there are more than 18 million Americans alive with a history of invasive cancer. While many of these people show no current evidence of disease, others may still exhibit signs of cancer and could be undergoing treatment. About 2 million new patients will receive a cancer diagnosis in 2024.
The Journey Beyond Cancer
Cancer treatment is often demanding, and patients experience deep relief when it concludes. However, new challenges can emerge, such as anxiety, uncertainty about the future, and fear of recurrence. This is where support from individuals, authorities, and organizations becomes crucial. The support needs of cancer survivors might be just as extensive as those during active treatment.
Survivors face a range of concerns, including:
The Role of Caregivers in Cancer Survivorship

- 1What to expect during follow-up visits and managing long-term health.
- 2How to cope with changes in your body and energy levels.
- 3Addressing feelings of anxiety, depression, and fear of recurrence.
- 4Managing changes in relationships with family, friends, and colleagues.
- 5Handling job and insurance issues.
