Glaucoma

Our registered nurses can help with the care and management of glaucoma.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the most common form of damage to the optic nerve caused by a group of eye disorders, often due to increased pressure in the eye. Without proper treatment, it usually leads to irreversible vision loss and blindness. There are several types of glaucoma, but the most common ones are primary open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma.

Glaucoma often presents with no early warning symptoms, which can make it challenging to diagnose. Additionally, vision changes associated with glaucoma can occur gradually and may go unnoticed by the individual affected. However, some patients have experienced any of the following signs:

  • Eye pain or pressure
  • Headaches
  • Low vision, blurred vision, narrowed vision (tunnel vision) or blind spots
  • Rainbow-colored halos around lights
  • Red eyes
  • Nausea and vomiting

Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive eye examination that includes measuring eye pressure, examining the optic nerve, checking the peripheral vision, and assessing the drainage angle in the eye.

Tests such as tonometry, ophthalmoscopy, perimetry (visual field test), and gonioscopy are commonly used to diagnose glaucoma.

Glaucoma may develop without any identifiable cause, but elevated intraocular pressure is the most significant factor affecting its progression.

Some factors that increase the risk of glaucoma are family history, age (especially over 60), and certain medical conditions (like diabetes and high blood pressure).

Untreated glaucoma can lead to permanent vision loss. While treatment can slow down vision loss, it cannot restore lost vision.

The main goal of treatment is to lower the intraocular pressure to prevent further harm to the optic nerve. Treatment options can include a combination of eye drops, oral meds, laser therapy, and surgical procedures aimed at improving the drainage of fluid from the eye.

While there’s no guaranteed way to prevent glaucoma, regular eye examinations are crucial, especially for people with risk factors. Early detection and suitable treatment can significantly slow down or prevent vision loss associated with glaucoma.

Skilled home nursing can provide essential support for patients with glaucoma, particularly for those who may have difficulty managing their eye drops or medications independently. In addition, home nurses can educate patients on proper eye care, monitor for any changes in vision or eye condition, and provide emotional support.

Professional involvement in a medical treatment cost depends on your health requirements and medical insurance particularities. However, a skilled nurse is always on call to guide patients in maintaining optimal eye health and quality of life. So please feel free to call us about any inquiry or information regarding home care.

Our team has the experience and resources to provide the best support for the patient and the family. Also, our registered nurses may help with assistance and could support any treatment process.
